Scope and Contents

Notebook headed "Gaelic Medical Lore", containing word lists and notes on Gaelic medical knowledge and beliefs. Begun from both ends. The text beginning at the back end is entered without first turning the notebook upside down, so that the order of pages is back to front.

Dates: ca. 1953-1960

Notebook entitled 'Poesias ... (nel siglo XVIII)' chiefly by José Perez de Montoro (died 1694), customs officer in Cadiz and secretary to Carlos II.

Scope and Contents The notebook contains sixty-seven religious and secular poems, as follows.(i) Anonymous and untitled patriotic poem, alluding to the tyranny of Napoleon, written on the flyleaves in an early nineteenth-century hand. (Folio 1.)(ii) Forty-six religious poems, all composed apparently by José Perez de Montoro, written in two or three different eighteenth-century hands. The majority are addressed to Saints in the form of 'letters', 'hymns', 'paraphrases', 'ballads',...

Scope and Contents A notebook compiled by John Tolmie, headed "II Songs" on the cover; 49 ff. Contains anecdotes, newspaper cuttings, sayings in Gaelic (f. 37) and songs in Scots, English and Gaelic. Undated except for a news cutting on f. 3, which is dated April 1905. Folios 17v-19v contain two songs by his brother Alexander McDonald Cornfute Tolmie: "Burial of Reuben a dog at Contin Manse, by A.M.C. Tolmie, 1884", and "A non-historical celebrity (Bella). Contin. - by A.M.C.T." Folios...

The volume is inscribed at folio 1 'Pastry Book Elgin 20th August 1734' and at folio 15 'Jean Robinson 23rd January 1749/50'. Later entries are largely copied from newspapers and magazines, particulary 'The Edinburgh Evening Courant' and 'The Edinburgh Advertiser'
