Notebook entitled 'Poesias ... (nel siglo XVIII)' chiefly by José Perez de Montoro (died 1694), customs officer in Cadiz and secretary to Carlos II.
Scope and Contents
The notebook contains sixty-seven religious and secular poems, as follows.
(i) Anonymous and untitled patriotic poem, alluding to the tyranny of Napoleon, written on the flyleaves in an early nineteenth-century hand. (Folio 1.)
(ii) Forty-six religious poems, all composed apparently by José Perez de Montoro, written in two or three different eighteenth-century hands. The majority are addressed to Saints in the form of 'letters', 'hymns', 'paraphrases', 'ballads', 'sonnet', 'romances', and other forms peculiar to Spanish verse. There are 4 folios cut out between folio 31 and folio 32 where the first change of writing occurs. (Folio 3.)
(iii) Twenty secular poems mostly addressed to notabilities of the time, including Carlos II of Spain (folio 82). These are mostly in the form of 'romances', but the section contains two glosses on texts by others (folio 130); and ends with a poem in 'quintillas' to a friend (folio 132). There are 3 folios cut out between this section and the religious poems.
