From the folio references given, Turner appears to have had access to a folio-sized copy of Guthrie`s ‘Memoirs’, possibly even to Guthrie`s holograph manuscript.
Turner`s criticisms, which are based on personal knowledge or experience of the events discussed, were written specifically to rebut a number of allegations made by Guthrie concerning James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Hamilton.

The blazons are arranged alphabetically under the first letter of the family name, with an appendix at folio 89 verso. Many of the individuals mentioned lived in the late 17th or early 18th centuries.
The signatures of James Norie and Walter Smiton occur on folio 1. These may have been the painters who became burgesses of Edinburgh in 1708 and 1779 respectively.

A Book of Hours written and illuminated in France. Library foliation in pencil: i, 184, ii-iii folios. After the calendar, the text block measures ca. ca. 8 x 5.5 cm and usually comprises 15 lines of text with generous margins all round. The pages are ruled in red, also on the blank folios.
