Scope and Contents Alastair Cram was educated at Perth Academy and Edinburgh University and started his working life as a solicitor in private practice at the Scottish Bar. In the Second World War he saw service with the Royal Regiment of Artillery and SAS during which time he was taken prisoner and was involved in several successful escapes. In some parts Charles Scott gives a fairly full account of his activities. The diaries for 1830-1832 deal only with Continental journeys, with some allusions to Sir Walter Scott’s last visit to the Continent. The last entry was made on 18 September 1841, in the neighbourhood of Tabriz, six weeks before the writer's death.

Christian Dalrymple kept a detailed dairy from 1798 until shortly before her death in January 1838. Recording her daily activities over a period of nearly forty years, the journals provide a valuable insight into the lifestyle of an independent and relatively wealthy woman of the time.
