Scope and Contents The seigneury of Anfield, or Beauharnois as it was usually called, was purchased by Edward Ellice (died 1863) from the Marquis de Lotbinière. Most of the papers consist of reports of various agents who administered the estate. The Ellices had considerable trading interests with the West Indies and as part of their business dealings loaned a certain amount of money to John Crawford Balfour, a planter, on the security of his sugar estates. He failed to repay the loan, and the estates passed to the Elices, who employed a manager to administer them.
