The papers formed part of the office files of Cadell & Davies until the dissolution of the firm in 1840, and were subsequently bought by Sir James Watson, Baronet, of Earnock. They were bought by the National Library of Scotland with the aid of the Reid Fund. The Friends of the National Libraries contributed half the cost.
