The originals were owned by Miss E B Irvine-Fortescue of Kingcausie in 1921.

The compilation of this list was based primarily on MS.4892. The gaps, mainly in the earlier portions, have been filled in as far as possible from Professor Alan Lang Strout's ‘Bibliography of articles in “Blackwood's Magazine”, 1817-1825’ (Lubbock, Texas, 1959), and from information supplied by him.

The list is arranged chronologically by the monthly issues of the magazine, each article being listed with its author.
Typed 'List of early contributors to "Blackwood's Magazine", 1821-1870', transcribed, and arranged alphabetically by author, from a manuscript belonging to Blackwood and Sons., Late 19th century.
The original list was apparently compiled in the late nineteenth century from material in Blackwood’s offices by James Sinton, one of their employees.
It is incomplete in that the attributions of authorship do not cover all the articles, particularly for the early years of the magazine.
This list has now been superseded by MS. 4893.

The contents are as follows:
(i) “Memorandum on Robert Cadell's collection of Scott letters, by his grandson, J. H. Stevenson, M.B.E., K.C.” (describing MSS.742-745), 1933 (folio 1), with notes by the Keeper of Manuscripts (folio ii) and James Glen, Glasgow (folio 13);
(ii) "Memorandum on the business books and letters of Constable & Co. and Cadell & Co.” (MSS.319-320, 324-325, 789-802), by the Keeper of Manuscripts, 1934.

The paper was written in 1932 (folio 11).
It appears to have been prompted by the publication the previous year of the fourth edition of ‘An adventure’ by Charlotte A F Moberly and Eleanor F Jourdain.
