Three manuscripts relating to Field-Marshal George Wade, bound in one volume, apparently that formerly in the Junior United Service Club.

Scope and Contents The contents are as follows.(i) Poem by a Scottish author, describing the roads, bridges, etc., built by Wade in the Highlands and referring to the manners and resources of the country, 1737. It is followed by notes on allusions and meanings of words, and preceded by a preface in which the author discusses the difficulty which a Scottish writer finds in composing English poetry. "Tibbie Flint's history", sketches in letter and anecdote form, written by Elizabeth Bell of Coldstream (1787-1876) in the character of Tibbie Flint.

Scope and Contents The material contained in the two volumes was apparently written between 1808 and 1828, and describes amusing events in the life of 'Tibbie Flint' in Roxburghshire, Edinburgh, and London. Authorship and other details are given in a note at the beginning of the manuscript, dated 24 December 1890, in the hand of William, 3rd Earl of Minto, which reveals that Elizabeth Bell used to dress up and act the part of Tibbie Flint at Minto House. Scope and Contents The localities are listed alphabetically within each county: the counties are arranged topographically. The work appears to have been compiled from the map of Scotland by John Ainslie which was published in 1789 (Adv.MS.20.1.5, folio 94): the list of place-names in Norway is taken from Pontoppidan`s map of 1781.
