Irving produced many popular and successful works throughout his writing career, most of which were published in Britain by John Murray. The manuscripts in this sequence relate to some of these works, including 'The Crayon Miscellany' and three volumes of 'A Chronicle of the conquest of Granada'. In addition, there is an incomplete manuscript for a review for the 'Quarterly Review', and a letter that contains a personal outline of his life up until 1837.

Scope and Contents William Ewart Gladstone published many books, pamphlets and articles throughout his political career. Some of these were published by John Murray and the manuscripts and proofs here relate to some of those publications. The manuscripts relate to the works of Gladstone on the Church, foreign politics and domestic political issues. (ii) 'Mirabilia huius Anni [?]1613', a discussion of Frederick of the Palatinate's acceptance of the crown of Bohemia, apparently written in 1619 (folio 22).

The collection consists of manuscripts on a wide variety of subjects, many copied from manuscript or printed works, and chiefly dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Among them are some account-books, diaries, and other manuscripts of family interest (including a few concerning the 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire, father of the 6th Marchioness of Lothian), but very few letters.
