Manuscripts and papers of and concerning the novelist, Neil Munro (1863-1930).

Scope and Contents

Born in Inveraray, Neil Munro became a journalist in Glasgow, rising to the post of editor of the ‘Glasgow Evening News’. His papers consist largely of manuscripts of his novels and short stories, though some of his newspaper articles are represented by presscuttings.

The papers include the dedication to Walter Pater of a work on Rossetti, 1893, parts of which were published by Elizabeth Sharp in ‘William Sharp’, pages 70-72; part of the prologue to ‘The laughter of Peterkin’; 'The immortal hour' from ‘The fortnightly review, volume lxviii (New Series), 1900, pages 867-896, with later corrections; and poems, some of which were published in ‘Poems and dramas’ by ‘Fiona Macleod’.

Scope and Contents

The manuscripts, proofs and typescripts in this series all relate to the written works of Layard about his experiences and work within the Ottoman Empire. This includes some of his most well known publications, including 'Nineveh and its Remains', which was first published by John Murray in 1849.

Scope and Contents

Austen Henry Layard wrote books and articles about his travels, excavations, later career and painting. Many of the publications were published by John Murray during a period of over 50 years.

The papers here contain the manuscripts and proofs for many of these works, including articles Layard wrote for the 'Quarterly Review'. There are also typescripts in this series, mostly relating to memoirs of Layard from his time as British Minister to Spain and Turkey.

The papers consist of thirty-six sets of loose-leaf quarto sheets, each corresponding to a published volume. Each set has clearly been copied from earlier versions of the poems, and, in some cases, is the final copy used by the publisher.

Scope and Contents Ian Rankin worked on his PhD thesis on Muriel Spark for the University of Edinburgh from 1983-1986. Rankin did not complete his thesis, and as such the archive does not contain a complete draft. The drafts in this series are in manuscript and typescript format. The materials are arranged into sequences based on the chapters and contents of Rankin’s PhD thesis, according to the outline in his latter thesis proposal.
