Manuscript of ‘Decisions of the Court of Session MDCCLXXXI-MDCCCXXII, in the Form of a Dictionary’, collected by David Hume when he was Professor of Scots Law at Edinburgh, arranged and prepared for publication when he was Baron of the Exchequer, and finally published posthumously in 1839.

Scope and Contents

The only difference from the published work is that the cases are not numbered continuously, but internally within each heading, and that there are no indexes (except for a fragment, Adv.MS.81.7.19, folio 207).

In the individual descriptions, the numbers of the cases (as in the published work), the headings, and the pages of the published work are given in that order.

Scope and Contents The work was composed in the early 1750s and revised circa 1760 and again just before David Hume's death in 1776; the first two and last two folios of the manuscript date from this last revision, while the remainder is the original text with later interlinear and marginal corrections. Hume paginated the manuscript in its final form, from 1 to 88, but 15-16 and 39-40 are not present, though there is no loss of text. Manuscript of 'Elements of agriculture' by James Hutton.

Scope and Contents

This, James Hutton's last work, was unfinished at his death in 1797. The text is written by an amanuensis on the rectos only, with occasional notes on the versos. Not infrequently pieces have been torn from the sheets before they were written on. There are some corrections by Hutton himself, especially at the beginning, and an early draft of part of the preface, bound in after folio 2, is also in his hand. On folios ii-viii are comments on the work in an unidentified hand.

The manuscript contains: a list of chapters (folio 1); the six letters between Isidore, Braulio and Sisebutus (folio 5); and the complete text (folio 7 verso).

Headings and some initials are in red. Notes for the rubricator occasionally survive in the margin at right angles to the text.

Scope and Contents A description by Ewen MacLachlan of fourteen manuscripts sent to him by the Highland Society of Scotland for examination. It was remitted to him by the Society in eight instalments between 26 May 1812 and 3 July 1813, and was intended for use in the compilation of the Society’s Dictionary.
