Scope and Contents James Stirling served during the 1808 Spanish campaign under the command of Lieutenant-General Sir John Moore, culminating in the battle of Coruña, 1809. The memoirs start on 12 August 1808 and end on 23 January 1811 when the army returns to Spithead, England.The memoirs also contain an account of Stirling`s deployment to the Islands of Zeeland, Netherlands, during the Walcheren campaign which begins in June 1809 and ends in 1810 when the 42nd Royal Highlanders were brought home...

Scope and Contents

The writer’s mother was Margaret, daughter of James Cheape, 1st of Rossie, and he married his cousin Isabella, daughter of Henry Cheape, 2nd of Rossie.

At folio 2 is an account of the last words, mainly biographical, of a dying lady, following a leaf inscribed 'Memoria D. Annae Lesleae'. There is a list of ladies' garments at folio 17. At the end the writer speaks of his conduct in the matter of private religion (inverted folio 1).

With a note (folio 49 verso) that a copy was made for William Palmer, Attorney, Ironmongers' Lane, London, as a guide to making his own catalogue; a catalogue of a library (not apparently relating to the preceding memorandum), eighteenth century (folio 50); and an alphabetical list of styles (folio 84).

These may have come from the collection of Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe (information supplied by the donor).
