Scope Note: Books of blank or lined paper on which letters to be sent have been written; also manuscript copies of letters, originally on loose sheets, bound together, usually in chronological order. Not to be confused with letterpress copybooks where the copies are created through a mechanical process.

Scope and Contents

The Edinburgh (from 1818, Scottish) Missionary Society, founded in 1796, established missions in Jamaica (1800), the Caucasus (1802), and Bombay (1823). The first was transferred to the United Presbyterian Church in 1847, the second was terminated in 1835, and the third was transferred to the Church of Scotland in 1835.

Dates: 1822-1851.

The secretaries during this period include: the Reverend Andrew Somerville, 1851-1868; the Reverend Hamilton M MacGill, 1868-1879; the Reverend James Buchanan, 1881-1908; the Reverend Frank Ashcroft, 1909-1930; and the Reverend James Webster, 1910-1923.

From 1914, the letter-books include letters concerning the Livingstonia Mission. For earlier letter-books concerning that field see MSS.7864-7868.

The letter-books are numbered to 69. Numbers 1-15, 43-44, 62, and 64 are missing.

The secretary during this period was the Reverend John Fairley Daly.

The Livingstonia Committee merged with the Foreign Mission Committee in 1914; after that the letters are chiefly on financial minutiae, the principal letters being included in the series MSS.7659-7690 and MSS.7691-7733.
