This copy letter book covers a period when James Guild (1810-1893) was trying to establish himself in business. After trying to estabilsh himself in a distilling business on Islay, Guild went to Canada. There are some diary notes as well as copy letters in this volume.

Douglas Kinnaird kept these volumes of copy correspondence for over a decade. They record copies of many letters of Kinnaird to a variety of correspondents, including Lord Byron and Stephen Lushington. Many of the letters concern the business affairs of Lord Byron and Charles Kinnaird.

Scope and Contents These letter books cover the business of the Thornbush Brewery in Inverness. In 1887, James Lyon Guild (1852-1925) and his brother-in-law Richard Wyllie (1854-1944) established Guild and Wyllie to run the brewery. Correspondence and papers of Edward Ellice (died 1863) of Invergarry and of his son Edward Ellice (died 1880) of Invergarry, and of other members of the Ellice family descended from Alexander Ellice, 'America and West Indies Merchant', London, who died at Bath in 1805.

The collection consists chiefly of correspondence and papers relating to politics, especially colonial matters, and to estate and family affairs. Both Edward Ellice and his son were influential Liberal Members of Parliament who owned substantial estates in Scotland, Canada, America and the West Indies.
