The papers contain the lawsuit in which the tutors of James George, 7th Duke of Hamilton, contested on his behalf the claim of Archibald James Edward Douglas, son of Lady Jane Douglas Stuart, to the lands of the Douglas family. Andrew Stuart acted as agent for the Hamilton claimant, and played an active part both in France and in Britain in the preparation and presentation of the Hamilton Case.

Andrew Stuart was a noted lawyer and politician. As lawyer he acted as agent for some important Scottish noble families, in particular the Dukes of Hamilton; as politician he represented Lanarkshire in Parliament, and was a member of the Board of Trade in Lord North's administration. The papers here are almost entirely of a legal and personal nature.

The papers of Barbara Seton are comprised chiefly of correspondence and legal papers relating to her jointure on the estate of her husband, Lewis Brotherson, in St Christopher's (folios 1-2), together with the disputed divisions of Touch and Archibald Seton's personal estate, on his death in 1818.

Bruce Allan Bremner trained as a doctor in Aberdeen and at Edinburgh University, and in 1841 went to practice in Bombay.

In 1852 he married Isabella, daughter of George Seton, commander of the ‘Lowgee Family’. They returned to live in Edinburgh in 1855 and purchased Streatham House in Canaan Lane in 1865. Dr Bremner died in 1890.

Scope and Contents George Combe was educated at Edinburgh High School and at Edinburgh University, where he studied law; he became a Writer to the Signet in 1812. At this time he began to study the phrenological works of Franz Josef Gall and Johann Kaspar Spurzheim, and soon became a fervent advocate of that science. In 1837 he gave up his legal practice to devote himself to spreading the causes of phrenology, secular education, and criminal and prison reform, travelling widely in Europe and America. His views...

Papers of Henry Cockburn concerning the action of oppression and damages of Lieutenent-General Walter Ker of Littledean against James, Duke of Roxburghe in the First Division of the Court of Session and Jury Court., 1820-1822.

Scope and Contents General Ker claimed that, through his legal agents, Roxburghe had bribed William Smythe, a former clerk of Ker`s lawyers, to supply material evidence towards the claim of the Duke (then Sir James Innes Ker) to the peerage. Roxburghe`s defence was that Ker`s action was motivated by a desire to insult and harass him in revenge for the rejection of Ker`s claim in the Roxburghe peerage case. Most of these papers consist of official correspondence with the government, and with the formal depositions and memoranda concerning legal cases mostly against planters for cruelty to their slaves. The case against Arthur Hodge in which Hugh Elliot by his own personal interference secured a conviction is well documented.

James Burnett, Lord Monboddo, was appointed a Senator of the College of Justice in 1767. A large part of the papers consist of his essays, drafts and notes, many of which were used in his books.
