Papers concerning the actions and counter-actions for damages raised by John Kingan, a merchant in Glasgow, and Robert Watson of Linthouse, a Glasgow banker, against each other, initially in the Second Division and later in the Jury Court., 1826, 1828.
Robert Watson and John Kingan had accused each other of being the authors of a series of anonymous letters circulated in Glasgow society, 1823-1825. Henry Cockburn was counsel for Watson, and complains (folio 1) that his client`s instructions hampered his conduct of the case. The facsimiles of the anonymous writer`s hand (folios 292-307) were not laid before the jury (note by Cockburn, folio 1 verso).

Papers concerning the Bailiery of Inchaffray; this office was granted hereditarily to the Lords Oliphant in the first half of the 16th century and passed to the Oliphants of Gask with the lands of Gask., 1533-1755.
The papers consist of early acts of the Bailiery Court and documents concerning the claim of James and Laurence Oliphant of Gask to the office in the first half of the 18th century and their holding of courts.
Papers concerning the barony of Glassford, of which James Stuart of Torrance was chamberlain., 1656-1680.
Papers concerning the case of Alexander Cahill, surgeon of the second battalion, 25th Regiment of Foot, indicted for murder after killing Captain Hugh Blair Rutherford, of the same regiment, in a duel., 1810-1811.
Captain Rutherford, who had challenged Alexander Cahill, was killed by the second shot, which he demanded after the first shots had missed both parties. Cahill was found not guilty by a majority verdict.
Papers concerning the case of David Landale, a merchant in Kirkcaldy, indicted following a fatal duel for the murder of George Morgan, an agent of the Bank of Scotland in the town., 1826
David Landale, the injured party in the quarrel, was acquitted of the charge. Henry Cockburn considered the case important (note, folio 1) because of the width of discretion given by Lord Gillies to the jury, and describes Gillies`s charge as "very sensible but very illegal."
A printed report of the trial (folio 230) and a pamphlet on its implications by George Buchan of Kelloe (folio 239) are bound up with the case papers.
Papers concerning the case of James Stuart of Dunearn, Writer to the Signet, indicted for the murder of Sir Alexander Boswell of Auchinleck., 1822.
The indictment of James Stuart followed a fatal duel over abusive articles written by Sir Alexander Boswell in the ‘Glasgow Sentinel’. Stuart was acquitted of the charge. A note by Henry Cockburn (folio i) states that "This volume contains the information (beyond what was supplied by their own personal knowledge) on which Mr. Stuart`s case was conducted.".
