Correspondence, legal, miscellaneous, and estate papers of the Murrays of Ochtertyre, Baronets, and their relations by marriage the Keiths, Earls Marischal.
Scope and Contents
The Murray papers concern chiefly their estates in Perthshire, but there is also some family correspondence, household accounts and inventories, and letters and papers of Jacobite interest. Of particular interest is the fine series of letters of General Sir George Murray written during his campaigns in the Peninsula and elsewhere.
The papers of the Keiths, Earls Marischal came to the Murrays of Ochtertyre following the marriage of Helen, heiress of Sir Alexander Keith of Dunnottar and Ravelston to Sir William Murray, 7th Baronet of Ochtertyre in 1833, when the family assumed the surname of Keith-Murray. The Earls Marischal were prominent figures in Scottish political life up to the forfeiture of their title and estates following the involvement of George, Earl Marischal (succeeded1712) in the 1715 Jacobite Rising. In addition to family and estate papers, there is much of political interest particularly for the Covenanting Movement, the siege of Dunnottar Castle in 1651, and the 1715 Rising. Later papers are chiefly of the Keiths of Ravelston and Dunnottar and their attempts to secure the restoration of the title and lands of the Earls Marischal.
