Scope and Contents The contents are as follows: (i) Financial papers, 1600-1701, mostly bonds, discharges and personal accounts, of the Earls of Wigtown and their children. (Folio 1.) This is XIV A 1-14 in the ‘Inventory’ (MS.20770). (ii) Note of annualrents, 1647; personal expenses, 1715-1716, 1734, of the Earl of Wigtown; and account, 1756-1758, of the Honourable Charles Elphinstone. (Folio 203.) Financial papers of George Combe and his household., 1780-1872.

The bulk of these papers comprise household accounts, which fall into two divisions: loose receipts and accounts (MSS.7475-7492), and bound volumes of general expenses (MSS.7493-7508). MSS.7509-7512 are concerned with legal and publishing finances.

Financial papers of James Seton., 1767-1800.

Scope and Contents

Although some personal accounts are to be found here, the majority of these papers relate to James Seton's tutorship of his nephew, George, 8th Baronet of Cariston. Included are a rental of Kennoway, circa 1767-1781, expenses for inclosing land, 1768-1769, and a roup roll for a sale of stock at Balbreikie in 1791.

Family and business interests are inseparable in these papers. Sir Patrick Murray's career began in the Border area, and one of his most important posts was as factor to the Buccleuch family. There are valuable estate papers concerning the lands and teinds of the Dukes of Buccleuch, 1648-1670 (MS.6486, folios 1-82, passim).
