The principal Murray family members are John Murray III (1808-1892), Sir John Murray IV (1851-1928), Alexander Henry Hallam Murray (1854-1934) known as Hallam, brother of John, Murray IV, resigned from the firm in 1908, Katherine Evelyn Murray nee Leslie (1878-1938) known as Evie, wife of John Murray IV and Sir John Murray V (1884-1967) known as Jack.

Scope and Contents

The contents are compiled from official and other documents, and consist of: rolls of service of the officers, non-commissioned officers, and men who went to the Crimea; rolls of promotions, honours, and awards; detailed returns of the state and strength of the battalion, including medical reports; a journal of the campaigns and battles in which the battalion took part.

The notebook is illustrated with occasional sketches, ink and watercolour, and with two military poems.

The volume contains: lists of household goods, 1864-1868 (folio 1); a few diary entries, 1871 (folio 16); an account of a visit to Braemar, 1873 (folios 24, 58); an account of a tour in Switzerland, 1873 (folio 30); and various literary, religious, and social observations, 1864-1875.

Some leaves were loose in the volume, and have been tipped in (folios 58-75); of these, folio 75 is an apparently unrelated recipe dated 1935.

Scope and Contents

Most of the volume consists of George Campbell Hay's diary which covers periods from 1938 to 1941 and gives details of his political activities and refusal to enlist in the armed services. Hay later used the book to draft the beginning of his projected 'Collected poems', 1928-1982.
