Unless specified otherwise, letters are addressed to, and correspondence is of, John, 2nd Earl of Tweeddale (1626-1697), created Marquess of Tweeddale in 1694, or his wife Jean, Countess of Tweeddale (1628-1688), The 1st Marquess was known as Lord Yester from 1646 until he succeeded his father, the 1st Earl, in 1654.

The 2nd Marquess was known as Lord Yester until 1694, and Earl of Yester from 1694 until he succeeded his father, the 1st Marquess, in 1697.

Until he succeeded his nephew, the 5th Marquess, in 1770 he was known as Lord George Hay of Newhall. Also included is the correspondence of Major William Hay, heir presumptive to the Tweeddale title until his death in 1781.

The 10th Marquess was known as Lord William Montagu Hay until he succeeded his brother, the 9th Marquess, in 1878. The 10th Marquess was succeeded in 1911 by his eldest son, William George Montagu, Marquess of Tweeddale (1884-1967), who was styled Earl of Gifford until that date.

MS.13330 contains material concerning electoral politics at Morpeth in 1777. MS.13330 and MS.13331, folios 1-43, are chiefly correspondence of Cornelius Elliot of Woollie, Writer to the Signet, and include many letters of the 1st Earl of Minto with Admiral John Elliot, and in MS.13331 there are letters of the 1st Earl concerning Fox's India Bill and the constitutional crisis of 1783-1784. In MSS.13336-13338 there are voters' rolls for Roxburghshire.
