The seventeenth-century letters are mostly from the papers of William Hamilton of Killileagh, Under-Secretary for Scotland during the reigns of William and Mary, who left his papers to his relatives, the Mures of Glanderston.

The letters treat almost entirely of financial and legal transactions in Scotland, England, and Ireland, especially with Cunninghams and other Ayrshire families. Public affairs are mentioned in the letters of the 1st Baronet to his wife, 1642, 1652-1653, undated, and in those of the Earls of Lauderdale (afterwards Duke), 1648-1650, and Glencairn, 1662, undated. Those of Mr George Cuninghame of Kirkland, 1647-1648, 1662, give a picture of the everyday life of the time.
