Scope and Contents
The photographs are largely views, particularly of mountains and seascapes. They were probably taken on a series of hostelling holidays in Scotland by train. Many of the photographs are taken from the train on the journey from Mallaig to Fort William.

Julius Jacob the Elder (1811-1882) was a German Jewish artist born in Berlin who lived in London between 1844 and 1855. He is known both for his landscapes and society protraits.The sketchbook contains more than 150 pencil sketches of a tour in Scotland from August 1846 to February 1847.
