Scope and Contents
Julius Jacob the Elder (1811-1882) was a German Jewish artist born in Berlin who lived in London between 1844 and 1855. He is known both for his landscapes and society protraits.
The sketchbook contains more than 150 pencil sketches of a tour in Scotland from August 1846 to February 1847. Almost all the sketches are dated and identifed. The earliest sketch is of the Isle of Arran. He then moved on to Greenock, Loch Long, Loch Lomond, Inverary, Loch Awe, Fingal`s Cave and Staffa, Ben Nevis, Fort Augustus, Invermoriston, Aviemore, Loch Achray, Loch Katrine, Brodick, and Goatfell, Lamlash, Isle of Arran, Dunoon, Dumbarton, Drymen, Stirling Castle, Perth, Dryburgh Abbey and Edinburgh. The Edinburgh scenes include The Mound, Calton Hill, Holyrood Palace, Salisbury Crags, Arthur`s Seat, Edinburgh Castle, St Stephen`s Church, view from Edinburgh Castle over the esplanade, Dean Bridge, Corstorphine Hill and North Bridge.
