Page proofs of ‘The fortunes of Nigel’ by Sir Walter Scott, with extensive corrections and additions in Scott’s hand., [1822, or before.]
Scope and Contents
‘The fortunes of Nigel’, proof pages corresponding to: volume i, pages i-xlviii, 1-313; volume ii, pages 1-334.
There are three complete sets of proofs of the 'Introductory Epistle' (pages i-xlviii), each representing a stage in the process of correction.
Thus, the manuscript corrections of the first are incorporated in print in the second, and those of the second in the third, which itself has further manuscript corrections.
The first two sets have been mixed in binding, and the signatures, of which there are three in each set, actually run as follows: 'a' of the first set, 'b' and 'c' of the second, 'a' of the second, and 'b' and 'c' of the first. The signatures of the third set follow in the correct order.
