Page proofs of the first editions of novels or portions of novels of Sir Walter Scott with extensive corrections and additions in Scott's hand.
Scope and Contents
There are also many comments by James Ballantyne, pointing out mistakes or raising questions, in consequence of which Walter Scott frequently alters the text.
The quantities of text contained in these proofs are indicated in the descriptions of the individual manuscripts by reference to pages of the volumes of the first editions.
At the beginning of MS.3401 is inserted part of the catalogue of the 1868 sale of Cadell's collection of Scott manuscripts, at which all these proofs were sold; a newspaper account of the sale is inserted at the end of the same manuscript.
