Incomplete proofs : "An essay towards a new edition of [Alexander] Pope`s works : founded on a review of those of Warburton, Warton, Bowles, and Roscoe", by ?John Wilson Croker., 1857, or before.
Scope and Contents
The reason for the proofs being among the Elwin papers is explained through a late 20th century note added to the protective cover that held the papers on their receipt in NLS.
"Proofs of preface to Pope`s letters. These proofs were given to JM V with other Whitwell Elwin papers by Rob[er]t Lutyens in Sept 1949.
There is a note on them `? [John Wilson] Crokers suppressed preface`. Certainly it is not the preface which appears in the Elwin-Courthope edition of Pope`s Letters, but Croker died some years before the book appeared and his connection is not obvious."
