Scope and Contents The reason for the proofs being among the Elwin papers is explained through a late 20th century note added to the protective cover that held the papers on their receipt in NLS."Proofs of preface to Pope`s letters. Scope and Contents There are here two letters of Lord Byron to John Murray II dated 1821, both relating to the work of William Lisle Bowles about Alexander Pope. These letters form part of the controversy between Bowles and Byron about Pope. The two letters have been bound into one volume.The first of these letters is dated 7 February 1821, with additional notes and insertions added at the end of the letter. Scope and Contents The suppressed preface and biographical note would appear from the title page to have been intended to accompany volume 2 of the work. However, this would seem to have been as a result of an error in the setting-up of the title page, which ought to have shown "Vol. I". This suggestion is confirmed by the volume note printed to accompany each signature. This would also conform to the logical position of such matter in a publication, and indeed, the position of the related material...
