Bibliography
Attention was first called to the manuscript by John G Dalyell in ‘Some account of an ancient manuscript of Martial`s epigrams’ (Edinburgh, 1811). An incomplete collation was made by Sir William Hamilton, the metaphysician, for F G Schneidewin`s second edition of Martial (Leipzig, 1853). A full collation by W M Lindsay was used in L Friedländer`s edition (Leipzig, 1886) and published in Lindsay`s ‘The ancient editions of Martial’; later editions, including those of Lindsay (Oxford, 1902) and W Heraeus (Leipzig, 1925), depend on this. The manuscript, cited as E, is the earliest and best representative of the `vulgate` family.
The manuscript was number 3 in ‘Treasures from Scottish Libraries’ (Edinburgh, 1964).
