The letters here were written by Irving from Britain, Spain and the United States of America to both John Murray [II] and John Murray [III]. In addition, there are letters from the American publisher George Putnam, who produced the American versions of the works of Irving. These letters mainly relate to the copyright of these works.

Letters of Washington Irving, mostly to John Murray II and to John Murray III., 1817-1856.
For nearly 40 years Irving wrote letters to his British publishers, John Murray [II] and John Murray [III]. Irving developed a good relationship with the house of Murray, even dubbing John Murray [II] the 'prince of booksellers'. The correspondence includes discussion of his works, copyright issues, his travels, proposals for new works and discusses other publications. The letters here appear in 'Washington Irving and the house of Murray', edited by Ben Harris McClary.
