Biography
Donald Stewart was the former Scottish Nationalist Party MP for the Western Isles and also a Parliamentary leader. His political career started in the 1950s as a member of Stornoway Town Council. He was heavily involved in local politics. In his third term as provost of the burgh he was elected to Parliament as the constituency’s first Nationalist MP. In 1974 he became parliamentary leader of the SNP, and from 1982 to 1987 he was president of the party. He retired as an MP in 1987 after having won five general elections.
