 Person

Biography

Lord Herbert Scott was the fifth son of the 6th Duke of Buccleuch and his wife Louisa, the daughter of the first Duke of Abercorn. He was born in 1872 and died in 1944. He joined the Third Battalion Royal Scots in 1890, and was sent to serve as one of two A.D.C.s to the Commander-in-Chief, Lord Roberts, in the South African War at the very end of 1899, arriving in South Africa at the beginning of 1900. He had already been an A.D.C. to Lord Roberts in Ireland. The Irish Guards were gazetted in April 1900, and Lord Herbert transferred to them shortly afterwards. Scott was awarded the D.S.O. in 1900. Three of his brothers, George, Henry and Francis, also served in the War. Scott returned to Great Britain in August 1902. For Lord Herbert's distinguished later army and business career (e.g. Chairman of Rolls-Royce), see Who Was Who, 1941-1950.
