There are also a number of portraits and studies of flowers. Two of the sketches are dated 1863 and most of the watercolours are titled. At the end of the volume several playing cards and a sheet of Chinese writing have been inserted.

A printed extract from Campbell’s pamphlet, ‘Notes on the Stature of the Lapps’ is inserted between folios 64 and 65.

On the front cover are James Augustus Grant's signature and the note 'This book was my guide through Africa. J.A. Grant'; on a leaf tipped in after page [ii] are pencil and watercolour sketches; on page 64 is a pencil sketch; and on pages 7 and 10 of the advertisements at the back are pencil notes.

The majority of the water-colours and drawings are landscapes, chiefly executed in the Edinburgh area or in Aberdour, Fife, during an extended visit to Scotland in 1809-1810, but there are also two drawings of fishwives, perhaps at Newhaven, and another entitled 'Bottling Whiskey' (see MS.8872).
Nine black and white photographs of landscapes now in the National Gallery of Scotland are also included.
'Tom: 2d of the juvenile poetic works of John Black’, containing drafts of verse dramas and other poems including fragments of ‘The Falls of Clyde, or the fairies’ by John Black, minister of Coylton.
According to a note inside the back cover, John Black was aged from 15 to 19 when he wrote the verses (1793-1797). There are a number of pen and ink and watercolour sketches.
