Scope and Contents

John Nisbet`s diary and memoranda book lists significant events in his life including a ‘Tour to the Highlands in 1818’, eyewitness accounts of the Radical Riots in Paisley, 1820, and George IV’s visit to Edinburgh, 1822. There are also lengthy passages on ‘The State of Trade in Paisley, 1825-1826’ and on national and international affairs including the French Revolution of 1830. Also included are genealogical notes and household and medical recipes.

The contents are as follows. (i) Notes, chiefly on Russian schools and universities, made in connection with Christopher Murray Grieve’s “Hugh MacDiarmid's” visit to Russia in 1950 (folio 1); (ii) Diary of the first week of the visit to Russia, 1950 (folio 10); (iii) Quotations and miscellaneous notes on pages torn from a diary for 1948 (folio 14). They include brief notes on a visit to Berlin in 1951 (folio 24 verso).

The entries in this diary are not continuous with those of MS.15902. They take the diary up to May 1861 and then (folio 13) describe a tour to Coblenz, Mainz, Frankfurt and Heidelberg. This is followed (folio 32) by a diary in German of a tour made by James Smith and his family in May 1862 in Germany, Switzerland, France and London.
