The notebook includes (folio 30) a summary and the opening of the short story, 'Smeddum', first published in the ‘Scots Magazine’, January 1933, pages 248-256, which here has the titles 'The Old Woman' and 'Freedom'.

The notes consist of summaries and extracts from Lord Monboddo's manuscripts (some of which are now lost) and pocket books, with some additional matter. The first hundred and many other pages are missing.

The summary ends circa 1805 and appears to have been copied and amended circa 1825. It may have been intended at one stage as a contribution to the debate on the East India Company's charter.
