Both Edward Ellice and his son were influential Liberal Members of Parliament who owned substantial estates in Scotland, Canada, America and the West Indies.

The box lid is covered on the outside in the remnants of a purple, synthetic waterproof jacket. The rest of the outside of the box is covered in green fabric. The box is lined with a map showing the isles of Rhum (in part) and Eigg, and part of Arisaig.
