Tom Hanlin worked as a coalminer at Armadale, West Lothian, until 1946 and much of his fiction is set in Scottish mining communities.

Some of the short stories were published in English and American magazines. There are two versions of 'Temper the Wind' (MS.27420, folios 51, 64), 'My shadow on the side of the tunnel' (MS. 27420, folios 128, 140), 'And always will be' (MS.27421, folios 39, 57) and 'Strange the way' (MS.27421, folios 180, 200). The versos of MS.27421, folios 119-141 contain parts of an early version of ‘The miracle at Cardenrigg’.
