Scope and Contents

Fleeming Jenkin was Professor of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh and Stevenson’s tutor in that capacity. Stevenson showed little aptitude or interest in engineering but the two men became firm friends. After Jenkin’s sudden death in 1885, his widow Anne asked Stevenson to write a memoir of her husband and this correspondence arose from that connection.

Scope and Contents Sir Robert Perks was Member of Parliament for Louth from 1892 to 1910 and treasurer of the Liberal League from its formation in 1902. The letters of the early 1900s until 1910 are chiefly concerned with the work of the Liberal League and nonconformist views on current political questions, with some related news cuttings. Scope and Contents

The letters of Sir Walter Scott, 1792-1831, are to various members of the Shortreed family, and concern Scott's business and social connections with the family. There is also a report (folio 94) of a conversation between Robert and John Shortreed about tours with Scott in Liddesdale, 1824. This is apparently the original report, of which MS.921, folio 78 is a copy. The report is printed in ‘Cornhill Magazine’ (1932).
