The notebook is lacking a few leaves.

The notebook contains names of ironmongers and coal-suppliers, apparently in continuation of MS 20577(i). It was later used for studies in Arabic, including a glossary, written probably whilst J B S Haldane was serving in Mesopotamia; and afterwards for mathematical calculations. A poem on the experiences of Haldane in Mesopotamia is written at folio 40.

Some of the poems are translations published in ‘Five centuries of Polish poetry’, compiled by J Peterkiewicz and Burns Singer (London, 1960). Others are verses for children translated from German (folio 67). There is also a short reminiscence of Singer's childhood (folio 81).

The notebook contains: lists of expenses and financial transactions (folios 2, 7); notes for a poem and an article (folios 24-25, 38); fragments of verse, possibly drafts for various projected poetical works, and unpublished in this form; and completed poems and sonnets. A number of the sonnets form part of a projected sonnet cycle on the Lake District which was apparently never completed.
