This early version, titled 'The Stranger turns', differs considerably from the published text: it is written in three parts, each of which has a foreword discussing the character of the heroine (folios l, 127, 408); some of the passages and chapters are in a different order; and the names of some characters were changed in the published version. Chapter 9 (chapter 5 of the published text) is a later insertion (folio 97).
