The principal Murray family members are John Murray III (1808-1892), Sir John Murray IV (1851-1928), Alexander Henry Hallam Murray (1854-1934) known as Hallam, brother of John, Murray IV, resigned from the firm in 1908, Katherine Evelyn Murray nee Leslie (1878-1938) known as Evie, wife of John Murray IV and Sir John Murray V (1884-1967) known as Jack.

Scope and Contents Although Mary Haldane is consistently referred to as ‘My patient’ it seems probable that much of the information, if not the narrative came from herself, for it breaks off in mid-sentence at folio 102 verso and ends on a half-sheet of paper found loosely enclosed and since tipped in at the end (folio 103). There are lengthy additions in her hand, dated 1917, at folio 4 verso, 12 verso, 53 verso, 54 verso, and many small pencil corrections throughout, also in her hand.The account...

Geraldine Jewsbury’s reminiscences of Jane Welsh Carlyle, begin ‘In Memoriam, J. W. C. ob. Aprl. 21, 1866’, and extend to page 126. Thomas Carlyle’s comments thereon and his own reminiscences of his wife begin on page 126. Inserted at pages 1 and 2 are two small sheets of manuscript by Carlyle, numbered (1) and (5), endorsed ‘Rudiments of Preface’. (5) is dated November 1868.
