The manuscript covers the period from the murder of the Regent Moray in January 1570 until shortly before Regent Lennox`s death early in September 1571.

The letters mainly concern political affairs and election prospects in Linlithgowshire, for which George Dundas was Member of Parliament from 1847 to 1860.
Letter-book of John Ewing, Writer to the Signet, legal agent for the Earls of Morton, concerning the Earls` affairs in Orkney and Shetland.
The correspondence is mostly legal and financial in nature, dealing with the running of the estate, the tenants` accounts, and the supply of butter, beer and malt, but there are some references to contemporary events such as the South Sea Bubble and the threat of a Spanish invasion. There is a break in the correspondence from 1721 to 1730, and some of the later letters are signed R E.

Some of the manuscripts of poems are fair copies; others ('The Progress of Poetry' and 'Lament for the Great Music') are corrected versions.

Letter of Mary Queen of Scots to her cousin and brother-in-law Henri d`Angoulême, Abbot de la Chaise-Dieu, natural son of Henri II and Lady Fleming, Queen Mary`s aunt., 1564.
Mary is anxious to have news of Henri’s studies though she is informed that he is employing his time well. In a postscript of fourteen lines she prays him to have the fear of God in his heart and not to change his old religion lightly as many have done. The signature and postscript are in the Queen`s autograph.
A positive photostat of the letter is also included.

The letter is not dated, but was written after 1729, since it refers to ‘Critical Essay on the Ancient Inhabitants of the Northern Parts of Britain’. The author was also familiar with the work of Jeremy Collier, Camden, Ussher and other historians.
