Scope and Contents The manuscript contains a ‘Sword’ watermark. (Heawood 3911, dated 1647) with letters G R B. The text is in fact dated 1647 (folio 9 recto). The Scribe is as that of Adv.MS.72.1.38, pages 29-30, 193; Adv.MS.72.1.42, folio 26; Adv.MS.72.1.49; Adv.MS.72.2.1; and Adv.MS.72.2.2, folio 46. Scope and Contents Other copies of this work are entitled 'Dello Stato della Regina di Scozia', or 'Narratione del stato della Regina di Scotia'. This is one of about thirty copies of the work, each written in Francesco Marcaldi's hand, but each with a different date and a different dedication. The preface in this copy is dated at Venice, 14 March 1580, and is addressed to Domenico Barbarigo.Marcaldi seems to have written it as propaganda in Mary's favour. See S. Rossi, 'Tre Narrazioni...

Manuscript of “Gaël Albanich” by William Forbes Skene (1809-1892), containing a history of the Highland clans.

Scope and Contents

The manuscript, dated 1st March 1834, was the winning entry in a competition of the Highland Society of London for the best essay on the history of the Highland Clans. It is illustrated in pen and ink and in watercolours.

Scope and Contents

One or other of the dates in the title is presumably an error. 'J.R.M.' has not been identified, but the material was collected and the manuscript written by the Reverend John Norman MacDonald, Minister of Harris. Notes on folios 6 verso and 50 verso, the latter dated 'Oct. 30th 1854', are signed with his initials. There are also some notes in pencil, in the hand of the Reverend A J Macdonald, Killearnan.

The manuscript is heavily corrected, and chapter 3 is missing. According to correspondence placed at the beginning of the volume (folios i-iv), this chapter was dictated. The preface is placed at the end (folio 525).

Manuscript of Geoffrey Keating’s ‘History of Ireland’ written by the scribe Sémus Ó Gribín.

Scope and Contents The scribe of the manuscript is Sémus Ó Gribín, who also wrote Royal Irish Academy 24 L 17, Geoffrey Keating’s ‘Eochair-Sgiath an Aifrinn’. He completed the manuscript in March 1696 for Patrick Logan, schoolmaster at Lurgan. Bound in (folios vi-vii) is a letter dated Lurgan, 17th August 1696, from Logan to an unnamed friend, consigning the manuscript to him for scholarly perusal and ultimate delivery to the Advocates Library. It thus became the first of the Advocates’ Gaelic manuscripts....

The contents are as follows.

Scope and Contents (i) ‘Historia Romana’ by Paulus Diaconus. The title in the manuscript is ‘Incipit Eutropius historiographus et post eum Paulus diaconus de historiis Italie provincie et romanorum’, but the whole text is the recension of Eutropius by Paulus. There are 18 books, the normal book xii being divided at chaper 8, and book xvii being included (cf. Crivellucci in ‘Bulletino dell’ Istituto storico italiano’, xl, page xlviii and what follows).
