Exercise-book, containing a list of debts of the Reverend John Thomson of Duddingston, February 1826, his income and expenditure account, 1826, and a list of his pictures sold in 1826-1827, with titles, prices, and names of those who commissioned them., 1826-1831.
Loose sheets, containing a list of debts paid and outstanding since February 1826, and the income and expenditure account for 1827-1828, 1830-1831, which gives particulars of certain pictures, have been sewn into the book (folios 11-23). All the accounts are in Alexander Macdonald's hand. See MS.3135 (xxv).
'Exercitationes ethicae', a volume of lecture notes on ethics taken by James Hamilton from lectures delivered at Glasgow University by John Tran., 1687.
The name William Hamilton, brother of James, also occurs. The lectures are dated day by day. There are two class lists (folios 3, 88), and a list of the dates of birth of members of the Hamilton family (folio 6), which indicates that the writer of the notes was probably James Hamilton of Dalzell.

In addition to the lectures, the notebook also contains two class lists (folios 1, 127), an ink sketch of a ship of the period (folio 124), and the draft of a letter relating to books belonging to James Hamilton's father (folio 125).
