The volume is inscribed at folio 1 'Pastry Book Elgin 20th August 1734' and at folio 15 'Jean Robinson 23rd January 1749/50'. Later entries are largely copied from newspapers and magazines, particulary 'The Edinburgh Evening Courant' and 'The Edinburgh Advertiser'
Notebook kept by the 6th Marquess of Lothian, chiefly concerning the service in Ireland of the Midlothian Fencible Cavalry Regiment, of which he was Colonel., 1797-1799.
The notebook contains copies of correspondence, orders, etc., a report of the Regiment's movements in the 1798 rebellion, and, inter alia, a treatise, 1801, on the etymology of military words (folio 68 verso), two stories (folios 103 verso, 136 verso), and notes on military theory.
