Scope and Contents

The papers are chiefly of transactions through factors, and include tradesmen's bills for personal and household expenses and accounts for repairs to Dunfermline Abbey.

MSS.14734-14735 and MS.14736, folios 1-82 are chiefly accounts of the 2nd Marquess of Tweeddale during his residence at Dalgety; and MS.14736, folios 83-228 and MSS.14737-14738 are chiefly accounts of the 3rd Marquess of Tweeddale at Dalgety.

Dates: 1639-1781.

The manuscript contains chiefly papers of transactions through factors concerning the Marquess of Tweeddale's lands in Tweeddale (Drumelzier, Eddlestone, Linton, Lyne, Newlands, Peebles, Stobo and Tweedsmuir), including accounts for Neidpath Castle, some personal accounts of the 2nd Marquess of Tweeddale, and Blackhope (Heriot) accounts after 1663.

(i) Papers, 1644-1667, of Steeds estate (Little Newton, Carfrae, Newlands, West Hope, East Hope, Snawdon and Rynslaw), including papers of transactions between the 1st Marquess of Tweeddale and Sir Archibald Sydserff of Howden concerning the wadset granted by the 1st Marquess to James Sydserff of Ruchlaw (see also Ch.11529-11546) (folio 1);

(ii) Papers, 1653-1660, of Oldhamstocks estate (folio 58).
