Scope and Contents

The Ellices had considerable trading interests with the West Indies and as part of their business dealings loaned a certain amount of money to John Crawford Balfour, a planter, on the security of his sugar estates. He failed to repay the loan, and the estates passed to the Elices, who employed a manager to administer them.
