The contents are as follows:

(i) 13 May 1818-1 July 1818, recording a visit to London and the journey home (breaks off at Manchester) (folio 1);

(ii) 1 November 1818-6 January 1832 (folio 17);

(iii) 3 November 1833-9 December 1834 (folio 58 verso).

From 1 November 1818, the entries are limited to the names of preachers and the texts of their sermons.

The diary is called, on the last folio, 'Diarius quintus finitus Janr. 31 1660 Laus Deo', but other volumes of the series do not appear to be extant.

The diary is of a personal character, but includes references to local affairs (such as the founding of a new school), to his friend Archibald Johnston of Warriston, to the weather, and, occasionally, to public affairs.
