Most of Christian Dalrymple correspondents are family and friends, but there are some letters concerning Christian Dalrymple's attempts to collect Lord Hailes's correspondence and papers for a proposed biography, 1802-1804. With some related correspondence including letters of Lady Harriet Hope (folios 112).

The writers include friends of Christopher Murray Grieve, ‘Hugh MacDiarmid’, publishers, and literary agents. While some of the letters discuss his work or reflect his political affiliations, many are requests to use his poems, or invitations to give speeches. In some cases, MacDiarmid used the backs of the letters for notes and drafts of poems.

MSS.21552-21554 contain letters from persons whose letters are more substantially represented, notably Sir John Barbirolli and Percy Grainger. From MS.21554, folio 88, the correspondence is in a chronological sequence.

Subjects dealt with include Jenny Lind's visit to Scotland, Kreisler's claim to have originated the theme for the Waltz from Coppelia, Verdi's reputed visit to Scotland, the Pachmann school, and the music of Elgar and Wagner in general.
