Scope and Contents

The volume contains miscellaneous historical notes, 18th and early 19th centuries, many by Martha Fletcher and her father Henry (on military matters and against the union of 1707); also an essay on Machiavelli, notes by Lord Milton (presumably lecture notes from Leyden) on the Roman constitution, continuation of the autobiography of the 4th Earl of Panmure (see MS.17804), and an obituary of General John Fletcher.

Scope and Contents

The work, which is more of an autobiography than a diary, James Murray's life until about 1717. It includes 'A short account of quhat was memorable in ye life, especially at ye death, of Agnes Gilchrist, spouse to Jo. Duncan in Penpont' (folios 60-64).

Scope and Contents Although Mary Haldane is consistently referred to as ‘My patient’ it seems probable that much of the information, if not the narrative came from herself, for it breaks off in mid-sentence at folio 102 verso and ends on a half-sheet of paper found loosely enclosed and since tipped in at the end (folio 103). There are lengthy additions in her hand, dated 1917, at folio 4 verso, 12 verso, 53 verso, 54 verso, and many small pencil corrections throughout, also in her hand.The account...

Scope and Contents Alexander Carlyle was engaged on his autobiography at various times during the last five, years of his life but at his death the narrative had reached only 1770. When it was published, in 1860, a supplemental chapter was added by the editor, John Hill Burton, to cover the remainder of Carlyle's life. It is written on the rectos only, with additions, some, quite, lengthy, on the facing versos. A number of passages were deleted by Carlyle: these, were, not printed but the remainder...
