Scope and Contents
41 photographs of Peter Scott Kirkwood, teacher at Livingstonia, Malawi.
Peter Scott Kirkwood was appointed as a teacher to Overtoun Institution in 1906. He married Janet Gilmour in 1910, and the couple`s first child, Janet Hinshaw Kirkwood, was born in April 1913. Kirkwood returned to Scotland in 1915 on furlough, and spent part of the First World War on service with the Y.M.C.A.
After the birth of his son in January 1918, and leaving his wife behind in Scotland, Kirkwood sailed again for Livingstonia on the Japanese steamer, `Hirano Maru`. The boat was torpedoed by a German U-boat off the Irish coast, and most of those on board perished, including Peter Kirkwood.
